Instagram tested story screenshot alerts back in 2018 and then dropped them. Here's where things stand in 2026, case by case.
| What you capture | Notification? |
|---|---|
| Regular story | No |
| Highlight | No |
| Feed post or reel | No |
| Normal DM chat | No |
| Disappearing ("view once") photo/video in DM | Yes |
| Vanish mode chat | Yes |
Screen recording
The same rules apply. Recording a regular story doesn't notify anyone. Disappearing DM media triggers the same alert as a screenshot.
Downloads through IGPVSTORY
Downloading a public story with our story downloader doesn't notify the poster, and since no account is used, you don't appear in the viewer list either.
Could this change?
Instagram changes features often. We'll update this page if story screenshot alerts return.
Be considerate
No notification doesn't mean anything goes. Don't share private moments people posted for their followers, and credit creators when you have permission to repost.
Every screenshot scenario, case by case
Regular stories
When you take a screenshot or screen recording of a normal story in your feed, Instagram does not send the poster any alert. This has been the case for years, after a short test of screenshot notifications was abandoned. The poster only sees that your account viewed the story, which is the same thing they would see if you had simply watched it.
Posts, reels and profiles
Feed posts, carousels, reels and profile pages do not trigger notifications either. You can capture them freely, although the usual copyright rules still apply to anything you share afterwards.
Disappearing messages in DMs
This is the one real exception. If someone sends you a "view once" or "allow replay" photo or video in Direct Messages, and you screenshot or record it, the sender sees a small dashed-circle icon next to the message. Vanish mode chats work the same way: a screenshot produces a notice inside the conversation.
Regular DMs
Ordinary chat messages, shared posts and normal photos sent in a DM do not notify when screenshotted.
Why people still worry
Rumours about screenshot alerts resurface every time Instagram tests a new feature in a few countries. Tests can show up for a small group of users and disappear again. If you're unsure, check the latest Help Center wording, but the long-standing rule is simple: only disappearing DM media triggers a notice.
The view itself is the bigger giveaway
Many people focus on screenshots and forget that just opening a story already puts their name on the viewer list. If you want neither the view nor the screenshot to be associated with your account, watch the public story through an anonymous story viewer instead. Since IGPVSTORY doesn't use an account at all, there's no view to record and nothing for a screenshot to be tied to.
A better option than screenshots: saving the original
Screenshots of video stories only catch a single frame, and screen recordings capture the interface, notifications and lower quality. If the story is public and you have a legitimate reason to keep it, a story downloader saves the original file: JPG for photos, MP4 for videos, at the resolution Instagram served. That's cleaner and usually sharper than anything you record yourself.
Etiquette and the law
No notification doesn't mean no responsibility. A screenshot of someone's story is still their content. Keeping it for personal reference is generally fine. Sharing it in a group chat to mock them, re-posting it as your own, or using it in an ad is not. If you're a creator worried about this, remember that Close Friends lists and "Hide story from" are your strongest tools. Our story privacy settings guide walks through them.

Quick answers
Does Instagram notify when you screen record a story?
No. Screen recordings of regular stories behave exactly like screenshots: the poster receives no alert. Only disappearing photos and videos in DMs, and vanish mode chats, generate a notice.
Can the poster tell I screenshotted from their analytics?
No. Story Insights for professional accounts show reach, replies, shares, taps and exits, but there is no screenshot metric. A share to another app can be counted, but a screenshot is not.
Is a third-party app safer for screenshots?
Apps that ask you to log in still view the story with your account, so your name appears in the list. They also put your credentials at risk. A browser-based anonymous viewer that never asks for a login is the safer route if you want privacy.
