Instagram gives you more control over stories than most people realise. Here's every setting, where to find it and when to use it.
1. Make your account private
Settings → Account privacy → Private account. Only approved followers see your stories and posts, and anonymous viewers see nothing.
2. Hide Story From
Settings → Hide story and live. Pick specific people who won't see your stories in the app. They're not notified.
3. Close Friends
Settings → Close Friends. Share selected stories only with a list. See how Close Friends works.
4. Replies and reactions
Settings → Messages and story replies → Story replies. Choose Everyone, People you follow, or Off.
5. Resharing
Settings → Sharing and reuse. Turn off "Allow resharing to stories" and "Allow sharing to messages".
6. Archive and save
Settings → Archiving and downloading. Keep stories in your private archive, or save them to your camera roll automatically.
7. Mentions and tags
Settings → Tags and mentions. Limit who can @mention you in their stories.
8. Check what the public sees
Search your own username in the IGPVSTORY viewer. Anything that shows up there is public. If that's more than you want, use the settings above.
Recommended setups
| Goal | Settings |
|---|---|
| Maximum privacy | Private account + Close Friends for personal stories |
| Public creator | Public account, replies from followers only, resharing on |
| Avoid one person | Block, or Hide Story From (they may still see public stories logged out) |
Settings for teens and parents
Instagram sets accounts for users under 16 (under 18 in some countries) to private by default. These "teen accounts" have stricter messaging limits. Parents can use Family Center supervision to see who their teen follows and set time limits, and teens are told when supervision is turned on. If you're a parent, start a conversation about why these settings matter rather than relying only on controls.
Protecting yourself from unwanted viewers
- Remove followers: on a private account, removing someone from your followers removes their access to your stories without notifying them.
- Block and block new accounts: Instagram lets you block someone and any new accounts they create.
- Limits: temporarily limit comments and messages from accounts that don't follow you, or that followed recently.
Story archive privacy
Your story archive is visible only to you. Stories you add to highlights become visible again according to your account's privacy, so review old highlights when you switch from public to private or the other way round.
Activity status and "Seen" receipts
Story privacy also connects to messaging. Turn off Show activity status to hide when you were last active, and consider read-receipt settings in DMs.
Creators: balancing reach and privacy
If you need a public account for work, separate personal content. Use Close Friends for family moments, avoid real-time location stickers, and wait until you've left a place before posting it. Remember that anything public can be viewed and saved anonymously by anyone.
