Why a Story Viewer Shows No Stories (and How to Fix It)

Searched a username and saw no stories? Here are the 7 most common reasons an Instagram story viewer shows nothing, and quick fixes for each one.

Puzzled man looking at a phone with a loading spinner

You type a username, press View, and get "No active stories". Annoying, but there's almost always a simple reason. Work through this list.

1. The account hasn't posted in 24 hours

Stories expire after a day. This is by far the most common cause. Fix: check the Highlights Viewer for pinned stories, or try again later.

2. The account is private

Private stories are only for approved followers. IGPVSTORY shows a private-account notice when this happens. Fix: there's no workaround. Send a follow request.

3. The story is Close Friends only

Green-ring stories are never public. Fix: none. Only list members can view them.

4. Typo in the username

Usernames often include dots and underscores (jane.doe_ vs janedoe). Fix: paste the full profile link instead of typing.

5. The username changed

People rename accounts. Old links then point nowhere. Fix: search the person on Instagram or Google to find the new handle.

6. Account deactivated, deleted or restricted

If an account is gone or age-restricted, no data is available.

7. Provider busy or rate limited

During peaks, our data provider may be slow, or you may hit our per-minute limit. Fix: wait 60 seconds and try again.

Still stuck?

Try another public account you know has a live story, for example a big news brand. If that also fails, contact us with the username and time, and we'll investigate.

Why stories sometimes show in the app but not in a viewer

If you can see a story inside Instagram but not on IGPVSTORY, the story is probably Close Friends only, the account is private and you follow it, or it was posted in the last few seconds and the provider hasn't picked it up yet. Close Friends and private stories will never appear in any honest viewer.

Browser issues

Rarely, an ad blocker or privacy extension can block our API calls. If the page shows a network error, try disabling extensions for igpvstory.com or using a private window. Make sure JavaScript is enabled, because the tool needs it to load results.

Age-restricted and regional accounts

Some accounts, such as alcohol brands, have age or country restrictions that require a logged-in, age-verified user. Their stories aren't available to anonymous viewers.

Video won't play

If a video story thumbnail loads but the video won't play, update your browser. Older browsers may not play some MP4 profiles. Download the file and open it in your device's media player as an alternative.

Report a problem

When you contact us, include the username you searched, the time (with time zone), your device and browser, and a screenshot of the message. That lets us trace the issue quickly.

Try it: use our free Instagram Story Viewer. No login, fully anonymous.
